Independent bottlings

An independent bottling is released by a company that buys casks from a distillery and bottles them under its own label. The bottlers covered here include Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory Vintage and Douglas Laing.

Releases are usually one cask or a small batch, so stock changes and many tracked bottlings have no current offer. Loch Fyne Whiskies’ own bottlings are sold mainly by Loch Fyne. Independent-bottler tags are inferred from the bottler named in our catalogue, rather than treated as label claims.

Questions

Who are the main independent bottlers?
Long-established names include Gordon & MacPhail, founded in Elgin in 1895, Signatory Vintage, founded in Pitlochry in 1988, and Douglas Laing, founded in Glasgow in 1948. Hunter Laing was founded in 2013. Some bottlers also own distilleries: Gordon & MacPhail owns Benromach, while Signatory Vintage owns Edradour.
Why are so few independent bottlings in stock?
Each release is usually drawn from one cask or a small batch, so it can sell through without being repeated. Our grid shows current in-stock offers from the UK retailers we check. A bottling without an offer here may still be available elsewhere; its absence is not a statement about every shop.
Why doesn't an independent bottling always name the distillery?
Some distilleries do not allow independent bottlers to use their name. The label may give a region or an invented name instead. We name the distillery only when the label or retailer states it, rather than treating a likely origin as confirmed. Check the individual bottle page for the evidence behind its identification.
