Whisky from Japan

Japanese whisky is made mainly in the Scotch tradition, with Suntory and Nikka behind much of what is sold in the UK. This page compares bottles including Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki, The Chita, Nikka Days, Hatozaki and Mars.

Bottles with no age statement are the norm here, while age-stated Japanese whisky is often scarce and expensive. Prices for the same bottle can vary widely between shops, so compare like with like and check bottle size as well as delivery.

For the background, read Whiskipedia’s guide to Japanese whisky. Prices are the best current in-stock offer from the UK retailers we check (how we compare prices).

Questions

Why does Japanese whisky vary so much in price between shops?
Prices vary because shops source stock differently, while age-stated Japanese bottles can be scarce and allocations may restrict supply. The gap can be substantial even for the same bottle. Compare the bottle size, age and edition, then check delivery: the lowest shelf price is not necessarily the lowest delivered total. Our prices cover only the UK retailers we check.
Is Japanese whisky the same as Scotch?
No. Most Japanese malt whisky follows Scottish production methods, but it is made in Japan rather than Scotland. Scotch has its own legal definition, while Japanese labelling rules are different. Some blends sold abroad may also contain imported whisky, so the word Japanese on a blend deserves a closer look at the label and producer’s description.
How much is Hakushu?
Hakushu prices depend on the age and edition. Distiller’s Reserve is usually the most widely stocked Hakushu among the retailers we check, while older age-stated bottles can cost considerably more. We only show Hakushu 12 Year Old when a retailer we check has an offer; if it is absent above, we have not found one. Compare current offers and check delivery.
