The best peated whisky under £50
Smoky whiskies under £50 from Islay and beyond, with the lowest current UK price and how peated each one is, label or house style.
Our links go straight to the retailer. We do not earn a commission from them.
For peated whisky under £50, choose by the evidence for smoke: Bowmore 12 Year Old has a derived peat tag and a 25–30 ppm malt specification, Talisker 10 Year Old is peated by house style, and Ardbeg 10 Year Old uses malt specified at 50–55 ppm. All were in stock and in budget on 14 October 2026.
How we chose
These are bottles in stock and in budget, not our favourites. We compared full-size peated whiskies at the UK retailers we check, preferred bottles sold by more than one independently owned retailer and grouped the picks by peat evidence. We have not tasted them for this guide.
A peat tag may be explicit on a label, derived from catalogue information, or inferred from a distillery’s house style. We say which applies rather than presenting every tag as equally firm. Prices exclude delivery unless the offer says otherwise; the live figure carries its retailer and check time.
The full peated selection includes more budgets. Where a producer tags a bottle as heavily peated, it also appears in the heavily peated list.
Gentle smoke to start with
“Gentle” is a buying category here, not a taste test. Bowmore has a lower malt specification than Ardbeg in our facts; for the other two, the label confirms peat but gives no ppm figure.
Bowmore 12 Year Old — £39.99 at DrinkSupermarket.com. A 12-year-old Islay single malt with peat derived from catalogue information. Bowmore’s malt specification is 25–30 ppm, a figure measured in the malt rather than the finished whisky. Only one retailer we check currently stocks it.
Connemara Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey — £37.99 at DrinkSupermarket.com. A 70cl Irish single malt with peat stated explicitly. No age statement or ppm figure is given, so we do not place it on a smoke scale. It currently has one offer among the retailers we check.
Ledaig 10 Year Old — £40.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 10-year-old single malt from Tobermory, with peat derived from catalogue information. Several retailers stock it. Without a ppm figure for this bottling, we do not call it lightly or heavily peated.

Big Islay smoke
Islay is a protected locality, but not every Islay whisky is peated. These picks are tagged peated; the difference is how firmly that tag is evidenced and what the malt specification says.
Ardbeg Wee Beastie 5 Year Old — £36.99 at DrinkSupermarket.com. A 5-year-old Islay single malt tagged heavily peated. That tag is inferred from Ardbeg’s house style rather than stated on the label. Only one retailer we check currently has it in stock.
Ardbeg 10 Year Old — £45.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 10-year-old Islay single malt with peat derived from catalogue information. Ardbeg’s malt is specified at 50–55 ppm; distillation and maturation still affect the finished whisky. Several retailers stock it.
Laphroaig Quarter Cask — £47.00 at The Whisky Shop. An Islay single malt with no age statement, tagged peated from Laphroaig’s house style. Laphroaig’s own-malted share is specified at 45–50 ppm, but that is not a complete specification for every parcel of malt in the bottle. Delivery can take one bottle over £50.

Peated whisky from outside Islay
Peat is not limited to Islay. These picks come from the Highlands and Islands; island distilleries are legally part of the Highland region, even though shops often list them separately. For the regional background, compare Islay whisky and Ardbeg.
Loch Lomond Inchmoan 12 Year Old — £42.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 12-year-old Highland single malt with peat derived from catalogue information. Several retailers stock it, but its label does not provide a ppm figure.
anCnoc 10 Year Old Peated — £45.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 10-year-old Highland single malt with peat stated explicitly. Only one retailer we check currently stocks it, so there is no cross-shop comparison yet.
Talisker 10 Year Old — £42.45 at Hard To Find Whisky. A 10-year-old single malt from Skye, tagged peated from Talisker’s house style. The peated share of Talisker’s malt is about 20–25 ppm. Several shops stock it, and delivery can change which has the lower total.

What ppm does and doesn’t tell you
Ppm is phenol parts per million in the malted barley, measured before distilling; it is not a measurement of smoke in the bottled whisky. A higher figure usually points to a smokier malt, but distillation and casks can change how the finished whisky presents. Whiskipedia’s guide to phenols explains the measurement, and its peat in whisky guide covers the process.
FAQs
What does ppm mean on a peated whisky?
It means phenol parts per million in the malted barley, measured before distilling. It is not a direct reading from the bottle. A higher malt figure usually indicates a smokier starting point, but production and casks alter the result. Where a label gives no figure, we do not invent one.
Is Talisker peated?
Yes, by house style. The peated share of Talisker’s malt is about 20–25 ppm, based on medium-confidence reference data. Its labels do not give a ppm figure, so our tag says the peat evidence comes from house style rather than the bottle. Check each release separately, because a distillery can make more than one style.
Which peated whisky is gentlest?
We do not rank smoke by taste. On malt specification alone, Bowmore 12 Year Old at 25–30 ppm and Talisker 10 Year Old at about 20–25 ppm start below Ardbeg at 50–55 ppm. Those figures apply to malt before distillation, not the finished whisky. Label evidence, age and cask still matter.
How we chose: check date and coverage
We compared in-stock offers from DrinkSupermarket.com, Hard To Find Whisky, Loch Fyne Whiskies, The Whisky Shop and Tyndrum Whisky in our 14 October 2026 catalogue check. Loch Fyne Whiskies and The Whisky Shop count as one owner. Prices and stock change; the live table on each bottle page is current, and the retailer’s checkout price is the one that counts.
