The best single malt whisky under £50

Single malts under £50 grouped by style, light, sherried and smoky, with the lowest current UK price and delivery for each.

Our links go straight to the retailer. We do not earn a commission from them.

For a single malt under £50, start with Arran Barrel Reserve for bourbon-cask maturation, Aberlour 12 Year Old for a sherry-cask influence or Talisker 10 Year Old for peat. All three were in stock and in budget at our 14 October 2026 check. The right choice depends on style, not a universal ranking.

How we chose

These are bottles in stock and in budget, not our favourites. We compared full-size single malts at the UK retailers we check, preferred age-stated bottles sold by more than one independently owned retailer and grouped the picks by cask or peat tag. We have not tasted them for this guide.

A peat or cask tag can come directly from a label or be derived from catalogue information. Where peat is inferred from a distillery’s usual style, we say so. Prices exclude delivery unless the offer says otherwise; use the live figures rather than an undated recommendation elsewhere.

For the broader choice, compare single malt whisky or the £30–£50 price band.

Light and fruity

This section covers unpeated, bourbon-cask and otherwise unsmoky picks. The heading is a style guide, not a tasting note: we have not assessed these bottles by taste.

Arran Barrel Reserve — £33.90 at Tyndrum Whisky. A 70cl Arran single malt with no age statement, tagged for bourbon-cask maturation. Several retailers stock it. Its lack of an age statement is the main caveat if that information matters to you.

anCnoc 12 Year Old — £35.99 at Tyndrum Whisky. A 12-year-old Highland single malt with offers from several shops. The age statement tells you the youngest whisky in the bottle is 12 years old; it does not describe every component as older.

The Glenlivet 12 Year Old — £37.00 at Loch Fyne Whiskies. A 12-year-old Speyside single malt tagged unpeated. It provides an age-stated alternative to the Arran, with multiple offers to compare. Check the delivered total rather than assuming the shelf order settles it.

Sherry cask

A sherry-cask tag does not tell you everything about the recipe. Some bottles are fully matured in sherry casks, while others use a finish or more than one cask type. Our sherry-cask selection separates those details where we have them.

Jura 12 Year Old — £34.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 12-year-old single malt from Jura with a sherry-cask tag derived from catalogue information. Its label details also include bourbon casks and an oloroso finish. Several retailers stock it, giving you a useful spread of offers.

Aberlour 12 Year Old — £42.95 at Hard To Find Whisky. A 12-year-old Speyside single malt tagged unpeated and sherry cask. The cask tag covers multiple cask types and a finish, so do not read it as full sherry maturation. It is stocked across several retailers.

Tamdhu 12 Year Old Sherry Cask Matured Single Malt Whisky — £46.99 at DrinkSupermarket.com. A 12-year-old Speyside single malt explicitly tagged for full sherry-cask maturation. That makes its cask wording clearer than a general sherry finish, although delivery can take a one-bottle order over £50.

Smoky

The peated whisky list includes the evidence behind each smoke tag. Age and peat are separate choices: a 10- or 12-year statement tells you about maturation time, not how smoky the whisky is.

Bowmore 12 Year Old — £39.99 at DrinkSupermarket.com. A 12-year-old Islay single malt whose peat tag is derived rather than stated as a ppm figure on the label. Only one retailer we check currently has it in stock, so there is no live cross-shop comparison.

Ledaig 10 Year Old — £40.00 at The Whisky Shop. A 10-year-old single malt from Tobermory, with peat derived from catalogue information. Several shops stock it. It belongs to the Highland region legally, although retailers often group island distilleries separately.

Talisker 10 Year Old — £42.45 at Hard To Find Whisky. A 10-year-old single malt from Skye. Its peat tag comes from Talisker’s house style rather than a ppm statement on this label. Several retailers list it, but check delivery before treating the shelf price as the final total.

Beyond Scotland

Single malt is not exclusive to Scotland. These picks use the same budget and full-size rules, but their national categories and label terminology differ. Compare the actual bottle rather than treating every country’s single malt as Scotch by another name.

Connemara Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey — £37.99 at DrinkSupermarket.com. A 70cl Irish single malt with peat stated explicitly and no age statement. Only one retailer we check currently stocks it.

Bushmills 10 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey — £43.99 at DrinkSupermarket.com. An age-stated Irish single malt. It offers a 10-year statement rather than a peat-led choice, but currently has only one offer among the retailers we check.

Cotswolds Single Malt Whisky — £46.99 at DrinkSupermarket.com. A 70cl English single malt without an age statement. It broadens the guide beyond Scotch and Irish whiskey, although there is only one current offer to compare.

Where the same bottle costs less

Start with a bottle, not a retailer. The live prices above show the current in-stock offer and its check time; each bottle page lists the other matched offers for the same age, edition, size and strength. This avoids comparing a standard bottle with a gift pack or a different release.

Delivery can change the order. Every bottle in this guide sits below the standard free-delivery thresholds when bought alone, so the one-bottle delivered comparison matters. Promotions also change, and a recommendation quoted without a date may no longer be in budget.

For the method, including matched bottles and delivery assumptions, read how we compare prices. For another regional route into the range, compare Speyside single malts.

FAQs

Is a 12 year old single malt under £50 still possible?

Yes. anCnoc 12 Year Old, The Glenlivet 12 Year Old, Jura 12 Year Old, Aberlour 12 Year Old and Tamdhu 12 Year Old were all in budget in our 14 October 2026 check. Availability and prices change, and some familiar bottles now sit above £50 at the specialists we track.

Should a first single malt be smoky?

Not necessarily. Choose by the style you want to try: unpeated or bourbon cask, sherry cask, or peated. Bowmore 12 Year Old and Talisker 10 Year Old show why the evidence also matters: one peat tag is derived, while the other comes from house style. Neither label gives a ppm figure. Our peated whisky guide compares more smoky options.

Why does the same single malt cost more in one shop?

Retailers set different prices and promotions. Delivery charges and thresholds can also change which shop has the lower total, even when the shelf prices are close. Compare matched offers on the bottle page, including the check time and one-bottle delivered assumption. A lower shelf price alone does not establish the lower checkout cost.

How we chose: check date and coverage

We compared in-stock offers from DrinkSupermarket.com, Hard To Find Whisky, Loch Fyne Whiskies, The Whisky Shop and Tyndrum Whisky in our 14 October 2026 catalogue check. Loch Fyne Whiskies and The Whisky Shop count as one owner. Prices and stock change; the live table on each bottle page is current, and the retailer’s checkout price is the one that counts.
