Speyside whisky

Speyside, around the River Spey in north-east Scotland, has more working distilleries than any other Scotch region. Its malts are mostly unpeated, and sherry casks are common but not universal. This page lists Speyside bottles in stock at the UK retailers we check, including Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Glenlivet, Macallan, Aberlour and GlenAllachie.

Speyside is a protected region under the Scotch Whisky Regulations and sits geographically within the Highlands. Our region tags come from the producer’s distillery; an independent bottling from an undisclosed distillery may not have one.

For the distillery directory, see Whiskipedia on Speyside. Prices are the best current in-stock offer from the UK retailers we check (how we compare prices).

Questions

What is the difference between Speyside and Highland whisky?
Speyside is a smaller area around the River Spey, geographically within the Highland region. Both names are protected under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009, so only whisky distilled in the relevant area can use them. Their styles overlap, although Speyside malts are mostly unpeated. Whiskipedia explains Scotland’s whisky regions.
Are Speyside whiskies peated?
Mostly not. The region’s house styles are largely unpeated, but some distilleries release peated bottles. Our peat tag for a Speyside bottle usually comes from the distillery’s usual style rather than a statement on its label. Check the bottle page for a house-style note, since an individual release can differ from the distillery’s normal approach.
Which distilleries are in Speyside?
The distilleries represented here include Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Glenlivet, Macallan, Aberlour, Mortlach, GlenAllachie, Tamdhu and Glenfarclas. The selection depends on the bottles currently matched at the UK retailers we check, not a complete directory. For the wider distillery list and its history, see Whiskipedia’s Speyside directory.
