About this data: method, downloads and sources

How we did it

Flavour profiles. Each bottle has a score from 0 to 5 on eleven flavour axes: smoke and peat, sweet, fresh fruit, dried fruit, spice, sherry and wine, wood and oak, floral and grassy, maritime, malt and cereal, and creamy vanilla. Where showing it is allowed, a profile comes from the tasting tags Whiskybase members have voted on for that exact bottling and from words counted in their tasting notes (we keep only the counts, never the notes). Bottles without their own entry borrow the profile of the same distillery’s core range, adjusted for anything we know about the bottle itself, such as a sherry cask or a peated release. Bottles we can’t match at all are placed from our own tags: peat level, the casks named on the label or by the retailer, and the bottle’s style.

Matching. Similarity weighs the flavour gap (smoke counts double and sherry one and a half times, because they are what most people choose by) together with peat level, cask, region, style, age, strength and price. Bottles from the same distillery are left out by default, because each bottle page already lists them. No more than two picks come from one distillery or independent bottler.

What this is not. These are suggestions from data, not tasting notes. A crowd profile describes the typical bottle, and batches vary. Prices are the lowest shelf price we found and change daily.
